Family of Mike Bossy issues clarification on his current condition
The news was released a short time ago.
We got the unfortunate news this weekend that New York Islanders legend and Hockey Hall of Fame forward Mike Bossy is in his last days, having entered palliative care during his fight with lung cancer.
And earlier today, there was an erroneous report released that Bossy had succumbed to cancer at the age of 65, though this was later proven to not be the case.
And now, a report from Bossy's family has been released, in which they state that the Hall of Fame forward is still with us and is currently surrounded by family and friends.
The translation reads:
"Contrary to rumors, Mike Bossy's family confirms to @TVASports that he is still at home surrounded by his loved ones and that he continues his fight against cancer. They thank those who support him in these difficult times and wish respect for his privacy.🙏❤️"
At the time of his diagnosis, Bossy promised to fight the dreaded illness with the same ferocity that he displayed on the ice during his time with the Islanders.
"I can assure you that I intend to fight with all the determination and all the passion that you have seen me display on the ice and in my game," he said at the time. "This same determination that has helped me achieve my dreams and counting my goals, the one that propelled me to the top of my sport, when I was still lacing my skates."
"Just as the athletes who are on the cusp of delivering the performance of their life, I will need all my strength and all my focus," Bossy continued. "Surrounded by my family and friends, I would like to keep this sacred and peaceful privacy, away from cameras and interviews."
The 4-time Stanley Cup champion amassed 1,126 points (573 goals, 553 assists) in 752 games during his 10 NHL seasons, all spent with the Islanders. He also won the Calder Trophy as the NHL's best rookie in 1978.
We'll continue to keep Bossy and his family and friends in our thoughts and prayers during this time.
