Longtime NHL goaltender and fan favorite Anton Khudobin has signed a new contract in free agency, but it appears that his NHL days are over. In fact, the 37 year old isn't even signing in the AHL or the KHL, he has reportedly signed a deal with Sokol Krasnoyarsk of the VHL, which is essentially a second-tier league in Russia. The VHL is to the KHL as the AHL is to the NHL, if that makes sense.
The Kazakh born Khudobin played last season with the AHL's Texas Stars, before being traded by the Dallas Stars to the Chicago Blackhawks in a salary cap dump. He ended up playing just one game for the Blackhawks last season. Of course, fans probably know him best from his run to the 2020 Stanley Cup Final with the Stars, where he established himself as one of the best goalies in the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
In total, Khudobin has played 260 career regular season games split between the Blackhawks, Stars, Boston Bruins, Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes and Minnesota Wild.
