On Wednesday, reports from various insiders emerge that the league is considering a drastic change to the NHL draft process. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman posted about the unsettling development, saying:

“The NHL has officially notified teams it would like to hear their opinions on ‘decentralization’ of the draft (having clubs stay at home while prospects attend NFL/NBA style). If there is desire for change, it would most likely be in 2025 — outside chance for 2024.”

Fans were quick to react to the report and started trending with their comments on the possible drastic change. Many appear concerned about the potential transformation. Many stated that the current set-up is “way more fun”, while others emphasized that the role of the draft’s current format in making on-the-floor activities more engaging for anyone watching and following the action. Most fans believe the current format encourages more substantial trading activity.

Here are some fans fuming over the report that keeps buzzing around the hockey world:

Following his report earlier on Wednesday morning, Friedman talked about his main concern with the potential change in his 32 Thoughts column on Sportsnet:

"My biggest concern would be time. Remember the second day of the 2020 draft? That was longer than the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Last weekend, a few people told me they thought decentralization would happen. Now, I’ve got others saying they are not so sure. So, let’s let it play out. Outside possibility it would take effect — if it happens — next June, but more likely 2025."

Fans will keep voicing their opinions and concerns as we all await to see whether the league will decide to maintain the time-honored tradition of the NHL Draft or opt for a more decentralized, NBA or NFL-style approach.

Time will tell. In the meantime, fans will keep reacting.
