It was exciting to see what Team USA will look like at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics. But frustration soon boiled over. Jason Robertson’s omission from Team USA’s 2026 Olympic roster has sent shockwaves through the hockey world. The 26-year-old Dallas Stars winger leads all American-born players this season with 48 points, has averaged 38 goals over his four full NHL campaigns, and has consistently topped the scoring charts for U.S. players the past three seasons. Yet despite this, he didn’t make the cut.

Fans on X didn’t hold back:

“In no world should Brock Nelson or Vincent Trocheck be on Team USA over Jason Robertson. Biggest snub of the entire Olympics.”

“How does Jason Robertson not make Team USA?”

“Jason Robertson snubbed. Brutal, horrible, and incompetent decision to not add him to the Team USA roster. No wonder Minnesota never gets out of the first round.”

Instead, general manager Bill Guerin opted for a pair of grittier veterans like New York Rangers forward Vincent Trocheck (32) and Colorado Avalanche’s Brock Nelson (34), both of whom didn’t exactly light up the 4 Nations Face-Off last year. While there’s logic in valuing experience and defensive reliability, passing on a proven scorer like Robertson has left fans and analysts scratching their heads.

Robertson wasn’t the only glaring omission. Cole Caufield of the Montreal Canadiens, Alex DeBrincat of the Detroit Red Wings, Matthew Knies of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Alex Tuch of the Buffalo Sabres were all left off, despite stellar seasons and proven chemistry in some cases.

Each of these players brings scoring and offensive dynamism that could have complemented Team USA’s roster, making the decision to pass on them even more perplexing.

As the Olympics approach, the question remains: did Team USA prioritize grit and age over talent, and at what cost? Fans are already worried the forward corps may be missing the firepower it needs to compete with Canada and the other top International contenders.

I guess we will found out in February…
