Fans turn on Patrik Laine as struggles pile up against Toronto

Despite a power-play tally, Laine’s uneven performance against the Leafs has fans questioning his effort and spot on the roster.

Patrik Laine reminded everyone of his elite shot on Thursday night, blasting a one-timer from the circle for a power-play goal to pull the Montreal Canadiens within one in the second period in a preseason showdown against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

That was the high point.

Laine’s inconsistencies are starting to overshadow his offensive flashes.

By the end of 40 minutes, the Maple Leafs had stretched their lead to 5-2, and fans inside the Bell Centre turned their frustration on Laine.

Montreal reporter Marco D’Amico didn’t hold back in his assessment and posted after the second period:

“You want to give Patrik Laine the benefit of the doubt because of the injuries, but the number of lazy plays continue to add up. Yes, he scored a rocket on the PP, but at 5v5, it’s been a very difficult last five periods. Let’s see if he’s able to adjust his pace and decisions.”

Fans were even sharper.

“If that is the best version they need to cut him,” one fan responded to D’Amico.

Laine may have shown his trademark shot, but questions about his consistency and commitment aren’t going away. And doubts about his place on the Canadiens’ roster are also being brought up…

After the game however, Laine fessed up and admitted he was off tonight.

"It was 7-2, that says it all.. some guys were sleeping, myself included," he said after the loss.
