There has been rampant speculation surrounding the Pittsburgh Penguins and whether or not they will trade Evgeni Malkin ever since their very short playoff run came to a screeching halt. There's a strong belief that the Penguins, who have struggled with injuries over the last two seasons, must make the trade in order to get younger and add depth to the roster in order to compete for a Stanley Cup. With that in mind we look back at a proposed trade that was brought up by Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal prior to the Penguins playoff exit, one that would see Evgeni Malkin in a Maple Leafs jersey next season. Matheson suggests the Pittsburgh Penguins could consider trading Malkin in exchange for Phil Kessel and Tyler Bozak. Kessel would help replace the offensive production lost by moving Malkin to another team, while Bozak would give the Penguins added depth up the middle. The Leafs also have a decent amount of cap space available with a large number of players heading to free agency this season meaning they could potentially retain some salary in the trade in exchange for draft picks. The cap space would give the Penguins more flexibility, and the draft picks would allow the Leafs to move forward with their long term rebuild plan. With Malkin under contract until 2022 they would have a quality player they could potentially build around. Of course this is all fantasy, so would you make the trade if you were the Penguins BM? Would you make the trade if you were the Maple Leafs GM? What adjustments would you make to make this deal a reality? Let us know and feel free to debate in the comments below.
