While insider Arthur Staples of the Athletic admits there is a goalie problem in New York, he cannot blame Rangers’ Igor Shesterkin. The starting netminder has been doing everything he can to rack up points for the Blue Shirts and Staples has now noticed tension between the goalie and his teammates. He points out how Shesterkin left the ice pissed after facing 91 shot attempts from the Florida Panthers and how things could be escalating in the dressing room.

“He was likely upset, too, that his team — which has touted the toughness it added this past offseason and what a deterrent that would be — did nothing to keep Florida’s forwards from barreling into the crease and jostling him around throughout the game.

That’s not the way you treat a goalie who’s stealing games for your teams, and that’s what Shesterkin has been doing.”

Too many times, Shesterkin has been left unprotected in his crease and Staples calls out his teammates to have his back while he is standing on his head to keep the Rangers as contenders. After dressing a list of examples in which the Blue Shirts failed to protect their goalie, Staples talks about how the players left him on his own against the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames over the weekend.

“Shesterkin has been the best goalie in the league so far this season in terms of generating points for his team. The rest of the Rangers ought to know by now that it’s time to pay their man back with better, simpler play.”

Staples is right. And we hope for the Rangers something can be done to fix this inside the dressing room so it shows on the ice!
