The Minnesota Wild have concluded another important piece of business.

After announcing the historic signing of star forward Kirill Kaprizov earlier this week, the Wild have now also inked starting goaltender Filip Gustavsson to a new long-term deal. The new deal for Gustavsson will be shorter than Kaprizov's 8 year contract but remains a long-term contratc nonetheless with a 5 year term.

National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman was the first to report the details on the contract, a 5 year deal with an average annual value and cap hit of $6.8 million per season. ESPN's Emily Kaplan was the first to report that the two sides were closing in on a deal this morning.

The Wild have now secured another important piece of their franchise for the foreseeable future, an important move following the retirement of veteran goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. The workload for Gustavsson could see an uptick now that Fleury is out of the picture, with Gustavsson already taking on a heavy workload last season when he appeared in 58 games for the Wild. Over that stretch he had solid numbers with a 2.56 goals against average and a .914 save percentage, a big part of why he earned this lucrative new contract.

Getting these types of long term contracts on the books is a big part of team building towards the future. That will be especially important for the Wild and Wild general manager Bill Guerin who now have the challenge of building a team around Kaprizov's new contract, a contract that eats up a whopping $17 million of the team's cap each season for the next 8 years.
