First round pick Nils Lundkvist demands a trade.

He wants out.

The New York Rangers have had a hard time with some of their high-end prospects as of late, and this week yet another massive headache reared its ugly head for the New York Rangers in the form of what appears to be a very unhappy Nils Lundkvist.

According to a recent revelation from New York Rangers reporter Vince Z. Mercogliano, Lundkvist has reportedly informed the Rangers that he does not intend to report to training camp for the upcoming 2022 - 2023 season and will instead wait to be traded. Lundkvist, who is represented by player agent Claude Lemieux, has reportedly informed the Rangers of his trade demands via his agent.

Lundkvist was of course a former Rangers first round draft selection, so such a demand won't sit well with the organization itself.

Lundkvist was selected 28th overall at the 2018 National Hockey League Entry Draft but, despite his high end draft pedigree, Lundkvist has appeared in just 25 NHL games since being drafted. The 22 year old Swedish defenseman appears to strongly disagree with how he has been deployed by his team, which no doubt includes an objection to the 34 games he spent with the American Hockey League's Hartford Wolf Pack last season, and appears to believe that he would get more opportunities on a different team.

While this is not an uncommon tactic among players across the National Hockey League, Lundkvist and his representation may have picked the wrong general manager to pressure in such a fashion.

As mentioned earlier, the Rangers have had other issues with their young prospects and that includes just last season with former first round pick Vitali Kravtsov. Much like Lundkvist now, Kravtsov had expressed a desire to be moved and played last season in the Kontinental Hockey League as a result of those desires.

As most of you reading this will know by now, Rangers general manager Chris Drury never pulled the trigger on a trade involving Kravtsov, and now the young forward is expected to report for Rangers training camp when things get under way. A similar fate could await Lundkvist if Drury can't find a deal that he likes, or simply decides not to trade the young defenseman out of principle.
