Flames’ Andersson explains why he “stole” the puck after Sens’ win

Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson looked like a jerk last night, but it’s not what you think. 

On Monday night, Ottawa Senators goalie Filip Gustavsson got his first start in the National Hockey League and blocked 35 shots in a 2-1 victory over the Flames. As tradition calls for it, his teammates wanted to make sure he got his game puck as a souvenir. Once the whistle was blown and the game came to end, the Senators rushed to Gustavsson to celebrate this important moment. Some of his teammates started looking on the ice for the game puck and couldn’t find it. They knew right away the Flames were up to something. 

That’s because Andersson collected the puck on the ice and was on his way to his team bench when one of the linesmen noticed his move. He let it go as he was called out. 

However, Andersson explained on Tuesday why he took the puck and he didn’t mean anything by it, it was not intentional, per team insider Hailey Slavian: 

“I was just in the heat of the moment. I picked the puck up. As soon as I realized it was his first NHL win I chucked the puck back. It was his first NHL win and obviously you should get the puck.”

Right… His mistake got things ugly as Senators’ Brady Tkachuk also saw what the defenseman did and wanted to get into it with him, but referees came to break it up. His older brother Matthew Tkachuk then snapped the puck away, but at least the Senators got it back for the young goalie.
