Flames announce replacement for Peters behind the bench

The Calgary Flames are holding a press conference on Friday to confirm what we already knew: head coach Bill Peters is out.

It was expected. Peters has been accused of making racist remarks at former player Akim Aliu during the 2009-10 season with the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL.

On top of that, reports of physical abuse were added to the mix. TSN's Frank Seravelli gave more information, using the comments of former Carolina Hurricanes players who were coached by Peters and it seems like there was also an abuse issue. Former Canes player Michal Jordan confirms to TSN that there were “multiple” physical altercations between Peters and players in Carolina.

“Effective immediately, Bill Peters is no longer a member of the Calgary Flames organization.”
“Geoff Ward will be our interim coach.”

Ward was leading the team’s bench on Wednesday night when they faced the Sabres in Buffalo. Treliving revealed that at that time, the Flames has already asked Peters to head back to Calgary to continue their investigation. The GM added that he wants to keep as much stability within the team as possible

"I felt that Geoff was the right man to lead with what happened in the past few days."

The GM could not guarantee that Ward would take the role of head coach for the remainder of the season or if a coaching search was underway. For now, Treliving maintains that Ward is the right man for the situation.

Treliving explained that he did his due diligence and talked to former employers and employees of Peters and received the help of the NHL in their investigation.

As of now, the Flames consider the matter close.
