Late on Sunday night, the Calgary Flames celebrated the arrival of MacKenzie Weegar as a new member of their roster. The club posted a video on their TikTok account in which we can see Weegar entering the Flames’ dressing room, looking around and putting on his new jersey.
Weegar, who is under contract through the end of the 2022–23 season, was one of the main pieces acquired by Calgary last month in the deal that sent Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers.
While this is a fun video for fans to watch as Weegar gets into his new gear, most folks on social media started bashing the Flames for their cheap dressing room.
Many fans pointed out how the dressing room was brutal with some of them sharing pictures of different dressing rooms around the NHL and other leagues like the NCAA, and how bad the Flames’ room looked compared to them.
Here are some of the tweets on the look of the Flames’ locker room:
As you know, the Flames and the city of Calgary have been going back and forth on the negotiations for a new arena in the city in recent years. Fans are still waiting to see if a new deal will come to the table to get them a new arena in town.
For now, I guess a renovation of the current dressing room won’t take place.
The focus of the money is on the players and their success, especially with GM Brad Treliving able to sign coveted free agent Nazem Kadri last week.
Weegar’s current contract carries a $3.25 million annual cap hit and he will be eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
As for his teammate in Florida, Jonathan Huberdeau, who made the move with Weegar in the blockbuster trade, he signed a massive eight-year contract extension with the Flames, locking him down until 2031 at a $10.5 million cap hit. Huberdeau will take up $5.9 million of the Flames’ cap space in 2022–23 before vaulting into the eight figures from 2023 to 2031.
That’s money well spent!
