Flames GM Treliving in tears as he explained why it took so long to settle Peters’ scandal

The Calgary Flames held a press conference Friday to confirm head coach Bill Peters was not longer holding the position in the organization.

It was expected. Peters has been accused of making racist remarks at former player Akim Aliu during the 2009-10 season with the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL. On top of that were accusations of physical abuse on two players while he was the bench boss with the Carolina Hurricanes.

It was clear that general manager Brad Treliving was distraught and shaken over what has transpired over the course of the past few days. The GM explained in as much detail as he could, the review process the team took to do its due diligence in addressing the issue.

He apologized for taking so long in the process bur knew it was a sensitive situation that needed to go through a thorough examination.

“I was not going to trade carelessness for thoroughness…”

Treliving fought back tears near the end of his statement: there was no handbook on how to deal with the Peters situation.

Fighting back tears later on in his press conference, Treliving admitted this is the most difficult thing that he’s had to deal with in his career.

I too believe the Flames were as transparent and as expeditious as they could have been. Treliving also made sure to explain that he did not know about the incidents before he hired Peters as the team's new head coach.

Let’s just hope a situation like this one never happens again!
