This just in, the Calgary Flames have signed unrestricted free agent forward Dominik Simon to a one year contract worth $700,000.

Check it out:

I have to say... this is somewhat of a surprising contract. Not that it's surprising for the Flames to covet a player like Simon, more so that it's surprising there wasn't more interest in Simon. With just seven goals and 22 points in 64 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins last season, no one was ever going to mistake Simon for being an offensive dynamo, but he's a very reliable 3rd or 4th line center who has the ability to chip in some offence from time to time.

To be perfectly frank, Simon is the type of player who could play on just about any bottom six forward group in the entire NHL. Maybe it's a sign of the COVID era and the NHL's flat cap salary situation that a guy with as much value as Simon can only muster a one year deal at league minimum. In any other year, Simon is probably looking at a two or three year deal worth $1 million to $2 million.

In any case, the Flames get themselves a legit bottom of the lineup center who has good NHL experience and they get him for a steal of a deal. Well done, GM Brad Treliving.
