It was down to 4 teams and this is why Calgary pulled the trigger:
On Wednesday night, the Calgary Flames struck a deal with the Dallas Stars, while needing the help of the New Jersey Devils, to move defenseman Chris Tanev down to Texas. It was revealed on Thursday that four teams, including the Stars, were the four finalists to acquire Tanev and Pierre LeBrun revealed on Insider Trading on TSN that there three others were all Canadian teams.
“There was a lot of interest in Chris Tanev . Edmonton, Vancouver, Toronto and Colorado were the four finalists that we know of other than the team that got him of course, the Dallas Stars . But it tells you that three Canadian teams who have Cup aspirations were in on Tanev which may also tell you what their next moves may be in terms of perhaps upgrading their blue-line.”
LeBrun went on to explain that one of those teams presented a first-round pick in an offer for Tanev, but were turned down by Calgary. We know it’s not the Maple Leafs since they do not have a first round pick. Instead, Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has reportedly attempted to acquire Tanev in exchange for multiple lower-round draft picks.
LeBrun believes the Oilers might have been the ones to offer their first round pick, along with defenseman Cody Ceci, in attempts to acquire Tanev. As you know, he is now a Star.
The Flames’ attention now turns to defenseman Noah Hanifin, who is a pending unrestricted free agent that allegedly rejected a contract offer in Calgary.
With one week to go prior to trade deadline, there is a lot more than could happen in Calgary and the Flames could eventually get that first-round pick in a Hanifin trade.
