Flames working on surprising move with Canadian rival?!

Trade chatter around the Calgary Flames has largely centered on familiar names this season, but a new report suggests something far more unexpected could be brewing behind the scenes.

According to veteran insider Bruce Garrioch, league executives believe the Ottawa Senators and Flames may have had internal discussions involving right-shot defenseman MacKenzie Weegar. Ottawa has been actively searching for help on the right side of its blue line, and Weegar’s name emerging is notable, and surprising.

The 32-year-old defenseman has not previously surfaced in trade speculation this season, with most attention focused on Flames forwards Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman. Weegar, however, checks several boxes for Ottawa. He’s a reliable, minutes-eating defender, shoots right, and just as importantly, is an Ottawa native.

That said, a deal would be anything but simple. Weegar carries a $6.25 million cap hit through the 2030–31 season and holds a full no-trade clause through 2026–27, giving him complete control over any potential move. Even if Calgary explored the idea, Weegar would have to sign off on the destination.

From Calgary’s perspective, general manager Craig Conroy continues to walk a fine line. Since the 2023–24 season, Conroy has emphasized retooling rather than a full teardown, aiming to remain competitive while developing a promising crop of young players. That approach suggests the Flames are listening on almost everyone, but not actively shopping key veterans unless the return makes sense.

Whether this is merely due diligence or the early stages of something bigger remains to be seen. But the mere mention of Weegar’s name in trade discussions signals that Calgary is at least willing to explore unconventional options, even if they involve a Canadian rival.

As the deadline approaches, this is one situation worth keeping an eye on.
