A rough night for Fleury.
It has been a very bad night for Marc-Andre Fleury.
On Saturday night Fleury and the Chicago Blackhawks faced off against the veteran goaltender's former team the Pittsburgh Penguins. The game was held at the PPG Paints Arena and Fleury's night started off well with the crowd giving him a warm welcome, but that was when the good times ended for Fleury on the evening.
The Penguins, unlike their fans, had a rather harsh greeting for their former goaltender. The Penguins shelled Fleury for 4 goals in the first period, resulting in the goaltender getting pulled very early. In fact Fleury barely lasted over 11 minutes of game time between the pipes before Blackhawks head coach Jeremy Colliton had seen enough and made the call to take Fleury out of the game.
Although you would like to see a veteran like Fleury get a chance to stay in there and shake off a rough performance early on in the game, I can't say that I blame Colliton one bit for making the decision that he did. Among the 4 goals allowed by Fleury on the evening was one particular blunder that completely took the wind out of the sails for the Blackhawks.
In fact the botched play by Fleury was strangely reminiscent of the mistake he made during the playoffs as a member of the Las Vegas Golden Knights, a moment that many believe was a turning point in their series against the Montreal Canadiens. Here is a look at that replay:
You have to wonder if Fleury did not have that very same mistake in his mind when he hesitated the way he did when playing the puck in this instance. As you can see in the replay, Fleury initially seems committed to playing the puck but then hesitates before doing so. It is that moment of hesitation that would prove to be costly, giving the Penguins their second goal of the game.
Coincidently that play also gave Drew O'Connor his first goal in the National Hockey League, something that the 23 year old must be very grateful for.
