Fleury reveals why he turned his back on former teammate

The former Pens goalie finally reveals the reason he crossed off Matt Niskanen's name off his mask during the playoffs.

Former Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury is a competitor, there’s no doubt about that. You don’t get to be a three-time Stanley Cup champion without being a fiery competitor and Fleury is amongst the most most competitive in the game.

And for proof, just look at what he did this past postseason when his Penguins were up against the Washington Capitals. Former Pens blue liner and current Capitals player Matt Niskanen took Penguins captain Sidney Crosby out of action with a brutal headshot in Game 3 of the teams’ second round playoff series. So what did Fleury do? Evicted him from his hallowed spot on the backplate of his mask.

No hard feelings, for sure. But the gesture Fleury made for his captain says everything. Just look at the size of the smile on Sid’s face when he tells the story. Fleury may be one of the best competitors in the game, but he’s also one of the best teammates in the game.
