Buy, Sell or Hold?
The NHL's Olympic trade freeze begins Thursday afternoon, which has led to teams hastening their potential deadline moves to this week. Of course, there's still the NHL Trade Deadline on March 6th where most of the big moves are expected to be made.
While there teams are some teams who are clearly in it to win it this season and some who have no chance at all, the majority of the league seems to be stuck in the mushy middle-ground. For these teams, it makes sense to wait until March so that they can see where they lie in the playoff picture on Deadline day.
For example: The Philadelphia Flyers.
The Flyers are presently seven points out of a playoff spot and are chasing the likes of the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL's Metropolitan Division.
There have been rumors that Flyers GM Daniel Briere is looking to make a move, particularly in goal. But... is it worth it to pick up a rental player? Or do they sell off assets and plan for next season?
Today, Briere made his plan clear on local Philly radio station 97.5 The Fanatic.
From Briere:
“It’s probably going to be on the quieter side. We’re not looking to unload unless something too good came to us. We’re not looking at rentals... This is not the time to spend assets to try to just get in, to make a push for the playoffs.”
These comments probably come as a relief to Flyers fans. Even if the team were to clinch a playoff spot, how good of a chance do they actually have against the likes of top teams like the Tampa Bay Lightning and Carolina Hurricanes? It makes sense to push for a spot and to make a deal if it makes sense. If it means parting with future assets and sticking your neck out on a potential rental, it's probably not worthwhile.
