The Philadelphia Flyers continued to fill out their roster on Wednesday, making a pair of moves that won't exactly shake the hockey world but do tell us something about where the organization is headed. Both signings fall into the depth and development category, and both players will be looking to prove themselves when training camp rolls around.

McDonald Locks In a Two-Year Deal

Defenseman Hunter McDonald put pen to paper on a two-year contract carrying an average annual value of $912,000. The towering 6-foot-4, 205-pound blueliner was a restricted free agent this summer after making his professional debut last season. He came into the pro ranks following a strong collegiate career and is known primarily for his heavy, physical, stay-at-home style of play.

McDonald is expected to come into camp and compete hard for a roster spot with the big club. Even if he ends up starting the year down with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms to continue developing at the AHL level, the two-year commitment from the Flyers suggests they see a future for him in the organization. For a rebuilding team that still needs to add toughness and defensive reliability, McDonald fits a clear profile.

Foote Arrives on a One-Year, Two-Way Deal

The other signing is forward Nolan Foote, who agreed to a one-year, two-way contract that will pay him the league-minimum $850K at the NHL level and $300K in the AHL. That AHL salary actually ties for one of the highest minor league paygrades among two-way deals for the 2026-27 season. It also represents a bump from what Foote earned last year, when he signed a free agent deal with the Florida Panthers worth $775K in the NHL and just $150K in the minors.

Foote was originally selected in the first round, 27th overall, by the Tampa Bay Lightning back in 2019. Since then, his career path has been a winding one. He's now on his third NHL organization in three consecutive seasons after being non-tendered by the New Jersey Devils and then spending last year in Florida's system. The 25-year-old, 6-foot-3 winger put together a solid AHL campaign with the Charlotte Checkers, potting 14 goals and 32 points in 54 games. He also got into 12 NHL contests for the Panthers, the most he's played at the top level in a single season, tallying one goal during that stretch.

Let's be honest here: the most likely scenario is that Foote starts the season in Lehigh Valley rather than on the Flyers' opening night roster. His NHL track record across 42 career games hasn't exactly screamed top-six potential. But the tools are there with his size and skating, and a fresh start in Philly could be exactly what he needs to take another step. If nothing else, he adds quality AHL depth with the ability to step up if injuries hit the parent club.

Both moves are classic organizational depth plays for a Flyers team that is still building toward something bigger. Neither McDonald nor Foote is going to be the centerpiece of this rebuild, but smart teams are built from the bottom up, and having capable players ready to fill roles when called upon is never a bad thing. Training camp will tell us a lot about where both of these guys slot in.
