Flyers officially cut ties with 3 players on Sunday.
The Philadelphia Flyers are moving on from 3 young defensemen on Sunday.
The Philadelphia Flyers have officially cut ties with 3 of their young prospects, making all 3 men unrestricted free agents in the process.
On Sunday, the Flyers had until exactly 5 p.m. EST to offer contracts to former Flyers' draft picks Carter Sotheran, Matteo Mann, and Brian Zanetti before their rights expired. The Flyers made the decision not to extend a contract offer to any of the 3 men, leaving the free to test the open market.
Sotherhan, a former 5th round pick (135th overall) at the 2023 NHL Entry Draft has spent the past 3 seasons with the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League. In his most recent season he appered in 66 games, scoring 6 goals and adding 27 assists for a total of 33 points.
Mann, a former 7th round pick (199th overall) at the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, most recently played for the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League where he appeared in 56 games, scoring 6 goals and adding 8 assists for a total of 14 points.
Zanetti was the highest selection of the 3 having been selected in the 4th round (110th overall) of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. Zanetti has spent the last two seasons overseas playing with the Langnau Tigers in the Swiss league and it seems likely that the native of Lugano Switzerland will continue his career in his home country moving forward. His most recent season saw him score 5 goals and 8 assists for 13 points over 52 games with the Tigers.
No doubt a tough day for all 3 of these young men and I wish them nothing but the best moving forward.
