Flyers strike deal with Trevor Zegras before arbitration showdown

Philadelphia has locked up one of its cornerstone players before the situation could become much more complicated.

The Philadelphia Flyers spent much of the offseason chasing a blockbuster addition, most notably through a record-setting offer sheet tendered to Anaheim's Leo Carlsson. That pursuit ultimately fell flat. But with the dust settled, the Flyers pivoted quickly to securing the talent already in their building.

Philadelphia has agreed to sign forward Trevor Zegras to a four-year contract carrying an average annual value of $9.125 million, according to sources who spoke with ESPN's Emily Kaplan.

The deal comes just days after Zegras filed for salary arbitration, a procedural move that now appears to have been little more than a formality. Reports earlier in the week indicated the Flyers were expected to reach agreements with both Zegras and defenseman Jamie Drysdale before their respective arbitration hearings.

Zegras earned this payday with a standout 2025-26 campaign, his first full season in Philadelphia. He posted career highs of 26 goals and 67 points across 81 games, establishing himself as a legitimate top-six weapon for a team still building toward contention.

The $9.125 million AAV lands notably higher than some pre-signing projections. Earlier estimates from CapWages and AFP Analytics had pegged Zegras closer to a five-year deal worth roughly $8.2 million per season. The shorter term at a richer annual number suggests the Flyers were willing to pay a premium to get the deal done without a prolonged negotiation.

Philadelphia still has significant cap flexibility even after this signing. The team entered the offseason with roughly $29.57 million in projected cap space, meaning a Drysdale extension and possibly another notable addition remain well within reach.

The Flyers' front office has also reportedly kept an eye on the remaining unrestricted free agent market, where names like Michael Bunting and Nick Blankenburg are still available. Philadelphia could even return to the restricted free agent pool, where high-profile youngsters such as Adam Fantilli, Connor Bedard, and Simon Edvinsson are all eligible for offer sheets.

But locking up Zegras represents the most significant piece of Philadelphia's summer puzzle falling into place. Attention will quickly shift to Drysdale's situation and whether the Flyers have one more major move left in them before the season begins.
