NHL's top insider confirms the rumors are true.
A huge trade rumor has seemingly come out of nowhere but the source of the information makes it a rumor that is beyond reproach.
National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman has revealed that former 2nd overall pick Andrei Svechnikov has informed the Carolina Hurricanes that he would be open to being traded elsewhere. The news is shocking if only due to the fact that Svechnikov has only ever played for the Hurricanes since they selected him in the first round (2nd overall) of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.
"His usage was down, he was on the fourth line, he had a game where he was down around just under 12 minutes and he was unhappy," revealed Friedman on Hockey Night in Canada.
Based on Friedman's comments it does not sound like Svechnikov has explicitly asked for a trade, but has made it clear to the Hurricanes that he doesn't oppose the idea.
"I understand that the inference was made to the Carolina Hurricanes that if they wanted to trade him that he wouldn't be upset about it," revealed Friedman.
Although Svechnikov hasn't had the most dynamic offensive season so far with 7 goals and 5 assist for 12 points in 22 games this season, a significant part of that was due to his incredibly slow start. Svechnikov was pointless through the first 8 games of the season which played a significant role in him being demoted in the Hurricanes lineup. That being said that is no longer the case and Svechnikov has been on a tear, perhaps hoping to showcase himself for a potential trade, with all 12 of his points coming in the last 13 games.
