Things have been relatively quiet around the National Hockey League waiver wire as of late, but we do have a little bit of waiver activity to report today.

According to a report from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, veteran forward Riley Sheahan has been placed on waivers by the Buffalo Sabres today. The Sabres have made the move in spite of the fact that Sheahan has yet to play a single game for them this season, no doubt thanks at least in part due to an injury suffered in training camp.

The former first round pick (21st overall) of the Detroit Red Wings at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft suffered a muscle injury during training camp and was placed on injured reserve by the Sabres as a result of that injury. He was however activated back onto the roster earlier this month, but in spite of the Sabres playing several games since then he has failed to find his way into the lineup.

Sheahan spent most of last season as a forward for the expansion Seattle Kraken, putting up 4 goals and 13 assists for 17 points over 69 regular season games in the NHL. He also had a brief 4 game stint with the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League where he had 1 goal and 1 assist over that stretch of play.

While most teams will be reluctant to take on any additional salary, it wouldn't be impossible to see a waiver claim here for Sheahan due to a few factors. First he is currently on a two-way contract which means that he comes at a significantly reduced cost when playing in the AHL, solid value for teams on a budget. Combined with the fact that his actual cap hit is fairly manageable at $950,000 and we could see a team looking to take a gamble on the veteran centerman.

Additionally, Sheahan has traveled a fair bit during his time in the NHL with stints on the aforementioned Detroit Red Wings, Seattle Kraken and Buffalo Sabres as well as the Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers. As a result Riley has established many relationships in the NHL which by extension means there are those who are very familiar with Sheahan as a player and may feel they can better utilize him on their own roster.

All that being said, it does still seem more likely than not that he will clear waivers but we will have to wait until Monday to find out.
