Former Habs goalie linked to GM job and it's not Patrick Roy!

This would be hilarious, honestly.

Montreal Canadiens owner Geoff Molson absolutely cleaned house this past weekend, parting ways with GM Marc Bergevin, Assistant GM Scott Mellanby and co-Assistant GM Trevor Timmins. Molson then wasted no time in bringing in a new voice hiring former New York Rangers GM Jeff Gorton as the team's new Executive Vice President.

It's expected that the English-only speaking Gorton will act as the team's de-facto GM until he and Molson make a hiring for the position. At that point Gorton and the team's new GM will work together when it comes to making hockey operations decisions. In other words, Gorton and his future hire will work together to manage the team's roster. It's also believed that, because Gorton is non-French speaking, that the new GM will be French speaking and/or bilingual. That has led to widespread speculation that French-speaking executives like QMJHL GM and coach Patrick Roy, Florida Panthers Assistant GM Roberto Luongo, Tampa Bay Lightning Assistant GM Mathieu Darche,  and Philadelphia Flyers' ECHL GM Daniel Briere could be in consideration for the gig.

Habs fans that I've talked to are absolutely foaming at the mouth for the return of St. Patrick to Montreal and would absolutely love to see Patrick Roy head up this team. But, in a true twist of irony, it's not Roy's name that NHL insider Elliotte Friedman is hearing for the job, it's a man that Roy was infamously traded for in the historic 1995 trade that saw Roy leave La Belle Province: Jocelyn Thibault.

On today's episode of The Jeff Marek Show on the FAN 590 radio in Toronto, Friedman reported that Thibault, now an executive in the QMJHL, has been linked to the Habs' GM position.

Check it out:

"A couple of people have thrown this name at me, I haven't heard as much is Jocelyn Thibault, the former goalie who is in the Quebec Major Junior League now".

- Elliotte Friedman

How wild would that be?

Thibault, the man who had the world put on his shoulders as "The Next One" in Montreal, swoops in yet again when Habs fans would prefer Roy himself in the position. Talk about setting Thibault up to fail... again.
