Winnipeg Jets head coach Paul Maurice is certainly no stranger to the Toronto press. Maurice coached in Toronto for two years and knows exactly what kind of pressures are put on management and players alike. He is also not a man who likes to mince words. He gave a very candid account of his time in Toronto on Friday. Maurice said: “If you’re saying something good about a player, he’s a rock star, and if a guy has a tough night and you want to deal with the media honestly, you’ve got to be careful about how hard you go at his play because then the next day or maybe even that day, it’s a drive-by shooting,” as per the Canadian Press. “They’ll find something that’s not going and it’s 40 people in the stall figuring out whether they should trade him, play him more or execute him.” While everything he says is fairly accurate, don't be surprised if some people don't appreciate the drive-by shooting reference. It's not exactly easy to find humour in a statement like that one. He also admitted to being in over his head while coaching the Leafs. “It takes a while to get a handle on it,” he explained. “I don’t know that I ever did.”
