There is a major rumor going around involving star forward Steven Stamkos, currently of the Tampa Bay Lightning, and when you consider the source it sounds pretty credible.

In a French language report for La Presse, writer Richard Labbe revealed that Stamkos, should he become a free agent this summer, would be particularly interested in two Canadian cities.

First let's get the easy one out of the way, one of those cities was Toronto, and considering the sheer volume of rumors involving Stamkos and the Leafs everyone has probably heard this rumor more than once by now.

The second, and much more interesting, suggests that talented center could view Montreal as a potential destination for the next phase of his National Hockey League career. Labbe's source on this is extremely solid, none other than former Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Brian Lawton, the man who was general manager when the organization drafted Stamkos.

Lawton believes that despite Montreal's terrible season, the market is still viewed very favorably by National Hockey League players. Furthermore he pointed to the fact that Steven Stamkos and Montreal Canadiens star defenseman P.K. Subban have been friends since childhood as one more reason Stamkos would consider an offer from the Canadians. Lawton pointed to the situation with Ryan Suter and Zach Parise in Minnesota as an example of a similar situation to what he believes could happen with Stamkos and Subban.

The good news is, with free agency fast approaching, we won't have to wait too long for an answer.
