A shameful incident that comes just over one year after the tragic deaths of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau.
A former National Hockey League player now stands accused of being involved in a rather ugly incident.
Former Toronto Maple Leafs forward and current Director of Player Development for the Buffalo Sabres Adam Mair has been arrested following an incident in which he is suspected of driving under the influence. According to a report from the CBC, Mair was arrested in Rochester, New York earlier this month after allegedly rear-ending another vehicle and has subsequently been charged with 3 felonies and an additional three misdemeanors. The charges include, but are not limited to, aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child in the vehicle as well as endangering the welfare of a child.
According to the report there were 3 children in the car at the time of the incident, which means that several lives were put in harm's way.
An incident of this nature never reflects positively on anyone but it will be especially damaging within the hockey community, a hockey community that is still mourning the loss of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew Gaudreau after the men were struck by a drunk driver while cycling just a little over a year ago.
Mair, a former 4th round pick (84th overall) of the Toronto Maple Leafs at the 1997 NHL Entry Draft had a lengthy career in the NHL, appearing in 615 games and scoring 38 goals and 76 assists for a total of 114 points split between the aforementioned Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings, Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils.
More recently, Mair served as the Director of Player Development for the Sabres but has been placed on administrative leave following the news of this incident.
Of course everyone makes mistakes in life but Mair allegedly putting several children in harm's way and doing so in a manner that hits so close to hockey fans makes this an incident that I believe will result in some finding it difficult to forgive him for his actions.
I hope everyone involved in this very unfortunate incident makes a full and speedy recovery.
