Former NHL executive explains why Markov is still available

We might have a better idea why the veteran is still looking for a contract.

As we are nearing the end of July, many Montreal Canadiens fans are still in a stupor over the non-signing of Andrei Markov, considered by many to be the team’s defensive pillar. While his salary demands might be considered somewhat excessive for his 38 years of age, one could posit that, despite his injuries, Markov seems to have regained a certain momentum.

He could also ensure a gravely needed veteran presence at the blue line, especially considering the numerous rookies that are expected to make the club this year.

If the Canadiens were not to sign Markov, he could be a great fit for a team looking to add a puck-moving veteran to their lineup.

In an interview with ESPN’s Josh Cooper, a former NHL executive said “Markov relies on an elite brain and elite puck-moving skill to perform at a high-end level, while somewhat flying under the radar by virtue of being older, foreign and never the big-name D on his team […]. He's still great, would be an asset to any team. Should just be a matter of cap fit”

Although the Habs can afford, and are expected to take the cap-hit of signing Markov, one could wonder if Marc Bergevin is looking at other options, despite Markov’s 36 points in 62 games last season which ranked him 15th amongst defensemen having played 60 games or more.
