Former NHL forward loses his mind on the ice and puts fans in danger!

We all know how hockey players can be intense on the ice, and try everything they can to make their team win. Even if they have moved on from the National Hockey League and are employed as a player in Europe. Former NHL forward Max Friberg did not have the career he was hoping for in the NHL, but still managed to sign a contract in the Swedish Hockey League in May 2017.

Friberg spend the last year of his NHL journey as the St. John’s IceCaps captain, the former farm club of the Montreal Canadiens in the American Hockey League before the team was relocated to Laval and became the Rocket. As the time of the signing, Friberg was set to become a restricted free agent and had a sense that he should take his talents elsewhere and decided to return home. Friberg had been a central part of the Swedish team that won the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championship under Frölundas HC’s head coach Roger Rönnberg and decided it would be a great personal choice for him to return closer to home, as Friberg grew up not far from Gothenburg where Frölunda is located.

However, on Tuesday night, the 25-year-old winger probably did not make his parents or friends proud when he completely lost his mind at the end of a contest. Friberg has always played an intense game, but never showed this type of anger on the ice. This is what happened:

While he attempted to block a shot from the point and send the disc behind his own net to reload and counterattack, Friberg instead deflected the puck at the back of his own net. His mistake unfortunately took place in overtime and automatically gave the win to the opposite team, Linköping, by the score of 4-3 in OT.

Frustrated, the 25-year-old winger violently threw his stick into the stands. In the short video posted here below, you can see the intensity of his throw and how the stick ends up in the stands, where of course we hope no one got injured from Friberg's ridiculous actions.

Right after the contest, Friberg was quick to meet with local Swedish media members to ask for forgiveness and apologize for his actions. He was immediately regretful of what took place on the ice and promised he would never attempt such a dangerous move ever again in any circumstance.

"It was a childish act by me, it was in the heat of battle. I got a bit angry that I did not manage to stop the puck. I put all the blame of my shoulders that the puck went in. It's never fun to score a goal in your own net, but that was the wrong way to react, explained Max Friberg to the Expressen right after his team's loss.

After he moved to North America and the Anaheim Ducks, who selected him in the fifth round, 143rd overall back in the 2011 NHL Entry draft, Friberg has played only six NHL games, all with Anaheim, while having spent most of his time in AHL. He was traded to the Canadiens in January 2016, in return for goalie Dustin Tokarski, but never played for the Habs.
