In case you somehow, someway missed it, the Edmonton Oilers officially relieved general manager Peter Chiarelli of his duties earlier this week, just hours after the team lost an embarrassing home decision against the league worst Detroit Red Wings.

The team made the news official earlier today but did not name an immediate replacement for the position.

Oilers CEO Bob Nicholson spoke to the media earlier yesterday and outlined his plan for moving forward. Nicholson’s focus is on hiring the team’s next general manager while assistant general manager Keith Gretzky assumes Chiarelli’s responsibilities in the interim.

Since the news broke there has been no shortage of criticism for the work that Chiarelli has done since coming on board three and a half years ago. Chiarelli’s ill fated decisions with the Oilers are well documented: Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson, Jordan Eberle for Ryan Strome, Milan Lucic at $6 million for seven years… it goes on and on.

While Chiarelli may have won a Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins back in 2011, ask any Bruins fan for their opinion on his work and it’s not exactly a pretty picture. Chiarelli made his fair share of mistakes with the Bruins, as well… namely shipping out Tyler Seguin, Blake Wheeler and multiple first and second round picks for players like Tomas Kaberle, Joe Corvo and Brett Connolly. One under the radar bad move though was trading former Hobey Baker Award winner Matt Hunwick to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for defenseman Colby Cohen. Who? Exactly…

The deal was so bad, in fact, that Cohen himself couldn’t help but weigh in on the deal yesterday when everyone was busy dumping on Chiarelli’s bad moves.

First, check out this tweet from TSN’s Frank Seravalli:

And Cohen’s response:

How great is that!? Here’s hoping more former players embrace social media the way Cohen has. If nothing else, the kid had a sense of humour about himself.
