On the latest episode of the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast with former NHLers Paul Bisonnette and Ryan Whitney, the gang interviewed former NHL enforcer Reid Simpson and got him to really open up about his career as a tough guy in the the NHL during the 90s and 2000s.

During the conversation the topic turned to performance enhancing drugs and the prevalence of steroids in the NHL during Simpson’s career.

“I was never the toughest guy, but I felt like I was always gonna to show up,” said Simpson. “By the end of junior, I had to play against Tony Twist maybe like 14 times a year… every guy was tough.”

At this point Biz interrupted Simpson and asked, “Was Twister on the juice? Is that a known thing? Will you even comment on that?”

Simpson took a deep breath and replied, “You know what? The funny thing is no one ever approached me about that stuff my whole career until my last year I was working out in this gym in Kalamazoo, Michigan… and this guy came up to me and was like, ‘Man, you work out HARD, you ever think about doing steroids?’ That’s the only time I’ve ever had it come up in my career.”

Simpson went on to say thought that he’s SURE other NHLers were on the juice back in the day.

“I KNOW there were guys who were on it back in that time. I saw guys who were 19 or 20 years old who were like 175 to 195 pounds and then all of a sudden you’re playing pro three years later and they’re like 250. And like 9% body fat… nobody gets that big by not doing that.”

Wisely, Simpson doesn’t mention any names, but you just KNOW that the NHL isn’t going to like seeing news like this in the headlines.
