Massive years-long suspension handed down to a former Red Wings prospect.
A shocking bit of news has come out of the International Ice Hockey Federation this week, news that brings a tremendous amount of shame down on the head of a former National Hockey League prospect.
According to an official statement released by the IIHF, former Detroit Red Wings draft pick Igor Grigorenko has been issued a four year ban from competition after the shocking results of a previous drug test were uncovered. A sample that was from Grigorenko all the way back in 2015 has come back as positive for what can only be described as a veritable cocktail of performancing enhancing drugs.
Grigorenko was found to have the following banned substances in his sample: metenolone, oxandrolone, trenbolone, meldonium, cathine, and pseudoephedrine.
Grigorenko was selected by the Red Wings in the 2nd round (62nd overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft but never went on to play in the NHL despite being a relatively early selection in the draft. He would only play 5 games for the Red Wings American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, during the 2007-2008 season before spending the remainder of his playing career in the Kontinental Hockey League.
His playing career wrapped up several years ago with his final season as a player coming during the 2017-2018 with the KHL's Magnitogorsk Metallurg but this suspension could still have a significant impact on his career. Following his playing career Grigorenko became a coach in the sport of hockey, something that he will likely now have to do in a different capacity following this rather severe 4-year ban.
It is genuinely hard to feel sorry for Grigorenko in this situation given just how many substances were found in his sample, especially considering that his playing career continued for several years after this sample was taken.
