There are a number of teams in the National Hockey League that made waiver transactions on Sunday, and that means that a number of NHL experienced players are going to be up for grabs.

In total 5 teams have placed a player on waivers today but only 4 of those players have NHL experience. The Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers, Colorado Avalanche and New York Islanders are the team's in question, but the Avalanche and the Islanders are using their waivers for the purpose of contract termination.

Perhaps the most notable player on waivers today is Bruins forward Craig Smith, a former fourth round pick (98th overall) of the Nashville Predators in 2009. Smith was a regular for the Bruins last season appearing in 74 regular season games and scoring 16 goals and adding 20 assists for a total of 36 points, but his production has dropped considerably this season with only 4 points in his first 17 games.

Smith is in the final year of a 3 year deal that carries an average annual value and cap hit of $3.1 million which will make him a tough to pickup for most teams in the NHL.

The Red Wings are also sending an NHL veteran to waivers on Sunday with forward Austin Czarnik being the player in question from their roster. Czarnik has already played 12 games for the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League this season and it seems likely that the Red Wings are looking to send him back down. He has 2 goals and 1 assists for 3 points over just 11 NHL games this season and is currently in the first year of a 2 year deal that carries an average annual value of just $762,500.

Last but not least the Oilers have placed veteran defenseman Jason Demers on waivers today after Demers was signed to a deal but did not appear in any games for the Oilers. It seems likely he will be sent back down to the Bakersfield Condors where he has played all 24 of his games this season. Demers' new NHL deal is a 1 year deal that carries a cap hit of $750,000.

As mentioned both the Avs and Isles were also active on waivers today, however both Danil Zhuravlyov (Avs) and Nikita Soshnikov (Isles) have been placed on waivers for the purpose of terminating their respective contracts.
