The Chicago Blackhawks were already staring down a lopsided 4-1 defeat to the New York Islanders on Thursday night. But the final minutes turned into something far uglier, and now the fallout is hitting the roster.

NHL Player Safety announced that Blackhawks forward Frank Nazar has been suspended for two games following an illegal check to the head of Islanders forward Bo Horvat.

The incident occurred late in the third period after Horvat scored an empty-net goal to put the game out of reach. Nazar made contact with Horvat's head on the play, immediately igniting a confrontation between both benches.

Officials on the ice assessed Nazar a five-minute major and a 10-minute misconduct at the 18:27 mark. The chaos quickly engulfed others as well, with Logan Stanley and Tyler Bertuzzi each picking up 10-minute misconducts during the same sequence.

The hostilities still were not finished. With just 14 seconds left in the game, Islanders forward Anthony Duclair and Blackhawks defenseman Wyatt Kaiser were each assessed two minutes for roughing, capping a messy final stretch that saw the two teams combine for roughly 30 penalty minutes.

It was a particularly bitter ending for Nazar, who had scored Chicago's only goal of the night before the controversial hit overshadowed everything else.

The league clearly felt the hit warranted supplemental discipline beyond the in-game penalties.

The Blackhawks will now have to navigate the next two games without Nazar in the lineup. For a team that managed just a single goal in Thursday's loss, losing any offensive contributor, even briefly, only compounds an already frustrating start.
