An 8th NHL team for the veteran forward!

There are very few players in the modern NHL who can say they've suited up for two full decades at the highest level of professional hockey. It's a feat that requires not just talent, but an incredible level of resilience, adaptability, and sheer love for the game. On Thursday night, one veteran forward proved he's not quite ready to call it a career just yet.

According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, 38-year-old winger David Perron has agreed to join the Dallas Stars on a one-year deal worth a prorated $850,000. The signing means Perron will officially enter his 20th NHL season, and Dallas will become the eighth franchise he's called home over the course of his remarkable career.

A Well-Traveled Career With a Cup Ring to Show For It

Perron's journey through the NHL reads like a road map of the league itself. Originally selected 26th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2007 draft, the Sherbrooke, Quebec native spent three separate stints with that organization, including the magical 2018-19 campaign when the Blues captured their first ever Stanley Cup. Between those stays in St. Louis, Perron bounced to the Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Anaheim Ducks, and Vegas Golden Knights. He then spent time with the Detroit Red Wings before joining the Ottawa Senators, only to be traded back to Detroit ahead of last season's trade deadline.

Over 1,239 regular season games, Perron has accumulated 332 goals and 480 assists for 812 career points. He's also chipped in 64 points across 110 playoff appearances. While those numbers have dipped in recent years, the former All-Star showed as recently as the 2023-24 season that he could still be a 45-plus point contributor. Last season was a bit rougher, as he combined for 13 goals and 28 points in 65 games split between Ottawa and Detroit, with his time in Hockeytown proving particularly quiet at just three goals in 16 games.

Why Dallas Makes Sense Right Now

The Stars entered the season as one of the Western Conference's top contenders after finishing second in the conference a year ago, but the early going has been bumpier than expected. Dallas sat at just 3-3-1 through its first seven games with only 16 goals scored, and the team recently lost forward Matt Duchene to core muscle surgery that will sideline him for roughly three months. That injury created both a roster spot and a need for some veteran offensive depth, and Perron fits that bill at a bargain price.

Because the contract is prorated, the Stars will only pay a fraction of the $850,000 cap hit based on how much of the season remains. It's about as low-risk as an addition can get. If Perron can stay healthy and rediscover even a fraction of his previous form, he could realistically provide 25 to 30 points over the remainder of the season. And if it doesn't work out, Dallas isn't on the hook for anything significant.

At 38 years old, entering his 20th season with his eighth franchise, Perron continues to defy the odds. Whether this turns out to be a final curtain call or just another chapter in an already impressive career, it's hard not to respect the longevity. The Stars are betting that the Stanley Cup champion still has a little gas left in the tank, and given the price tag, it's a wager well worth making.
