It seems like to some players winning really does matter.

While he probably could have earned himself a little more on the open market, free agent defenseman Justin Schultz has reportedly made the decision to remain a Penguin, the team with whom he won a Stanley Cup after being traded from perennial losers the Edmonton Oilers.

The Penguins made the following official announcement confirming both the term and financials of the contract, and all in all it seems like a team-friendly deal.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed defenseman Justin Schultz to a one-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford.

The deal has an average annual value of $1.4 million.

It seems like Schultz took a  bit of a discount as stated earlier, but this may also be a way from him to continue building h[is long-term value while hoping for a bigger contract next time around. There's no doubt that he rehabilitated his image somewhat from his time as an Oiler, and he's likely hoping to do more of the same in Pittsburgh next season.
