Free agent Jeff Skinner signs surprising new contract

Jeff Skinner's journey through professional hockey has taken plenty of twists in recent years, from a strong start with the Hurricanes to a buyout in Buffalo, then a second chance in Edmonton to a brief and underwhelming stint in San Jose. But the veteran forward has now charted a new course entirely, signing with Swiss National League club EHC Biel.

The team announced the deal on August 14, confirming that Skinner has committed to a contract running through the end of April 2027.

Skinner's path to Switzerland began earlier this year when, according to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the San Jose Sharks placed him on unconditional waivers. At the time, the 33-year-old had managed just 6 goals and 13 points across 32 games on a one-year, $3 million deal.

Once his contract was terminated, Skinner became an unrestricted free agent. No NHL club stepped in with a new offer that materialized into a roster spot, leaving the door open for a move overseas.

Financially, Skinner is far from desperate. His 2024 buyout from the Buffalo Sabres still pays him handsomely, with $6.4 million reportedly owed this coming season and additional payments stretching all the way to 2030. That financial cushion likely gave him the freedom to pick a destination based on fit and opportunity rather than pure economics.

EHC Biel, a three-time Swiss champion, clearly sees Skinner as a marquee addition. The club's social media announcement described him as an "NHL star," signalling the excitement surrounding his arrival in Bienne.

For Skinner, the move represents a fresh start in a competitive European league after more than a decade in the NHL. He was once a consistent 30-goal threat during his prime years with the Carolina Hurricanes and enjoyed a career-high 40-goal campaign in Buffalo during the 2018-19 season. His production had declined sharply in recent seasons, however, making a return to the NHL increasingly unlikely.

The contract through April 2027 suggests EHC Biel is betting on Skinner for more than just a brief audition. Whether this marks the final chapter of his playing career or simply a European detour before one last NHL attempt remains to be seen.

Skinner seems ready to embrace Swiss hockey and bring his experience to a club eager to compete for titles in the National League.
