Free agent Matt Grzelcyk signs contract right before the start of the season!

The Buffalo Sabres entered the preseason already dealing with significant questions on their blue line. Those questions became urgent over the past week, and the team has now moved to provide an answer.

Buffalo announced the signing of defenseman Matt Grzelcyk to a one-year contract carrying an $850,000 cap hit. The deal brings a seasoned left-shot defenseman into a roster that suddenly needs one.

Grzelcyk is no stranger to the NHL. He has appeared in 596 games across 10 seasons and most recently suited up for the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2024-25 campaign, where he recorded 12 assists in 69 contests.

The timing of the signing is no coincidence. The Sabres are currently without two key defensemen due to injury. Mattias Samuelsson is dealing with a lower-body issue that has him listed as week to week, while young blueliner Olen Zellweger entered concussion protocol following a hit from Columbus forward Carson Soucy during a Sept. 22 preseason game.

Grzelcyk's arrival gives the Sabres a reliable, experienced option to help fill the gap on the left side while both players recover. His decade of NHL experience, most of it spent with the Boston Bruins before his time in Chicago, provides a steadying presence for a defensive group navigating early-season adversity.

The injury concerns in Buffalo have not been limited to the blue line. Goaltender Alex Lyon sustained an upper-body injury during Thursday's preseason game in Detroit after diving for a loose puck in the opening period. Ruff said he is "optimistic it's not too bad." Forward Jiri Kulich also left that game, though Ruff indicated the move was purely precautionary after Kulich scored a second-period goal.

Grzelcyk represents a low-risk, experienced addition for a Sabres team hoping its injury list shrinks before the regular season begins in earnest.
