Needless to say, the Rangers are quite happy with their current starting goalie. Henrik Lundqvist is known to be one of the best goal keeper in the league and fans can count on him to make the most amazing saves when needed.

However, the King is not eternal. At 35 years old, he's still at his prime, but he's not expected to play forever either. His 7 years, 59.5M$ contracts is set to expire in 2020-2021 and people are already thinking about who might fill the gap at that point.

We just learned that Igor Shesterkin might join the NHL in the next few years.

Maybe you know the guy, maybe you don't. He's currently playing for the St. Petersburg SKA and honestly burning the league. With a goal allowed average (GAA) of 1.64 during the regular season with a save percentage of 0.937, he's far above anything in the NHL at this point. Granted, this year was his first real season in the league and it might have been a statistical anomaly, but he still played 39 games which makes it pretty legitimate.

He's looking to come back in 2019-2020, so if the plan holds, he would be the backup tender for Lundqvist for two years before taking the net himself afterward. He's only 21 years old, so this plan would have him around 25 years old, a perfect age to become a starter in the NHL.

It's actually a real surprise to see him perform so well since he was only drafted 118th overall back in 2014. There are many hidden gems in the late rounds of a draft and this might have been one.
