The future of Alex Ovechkin remains one of the biggest unanswered questions of the current NHL offseason, with a clearer timeline now emerging for when a decision is expected.

According to Sportsnet reporter Chris Johnston on That’s Hockey, Ovechkin has indicated he will wait until July before formally communicating his plans to the Washington Capitals.

“What Alex Ovechkin has said is that he’s gonna wait ’til July to communicate a decision,” Johnston reported earlier this week.

Ovechkin, 40, is currently weighing whether to retire from professional hockey or return for what would be a 22nd NHL season. As a pending unrestricted free agent, his situation has naturally become one of the most closely watched storylines heading into the summer.

The Capitals captain is expected to make his decision after discussions with both his family and Washington’s front office regarding the organization’s direction and potential roster improvements moving forward.

Ovechkin recently completed a five-year, $47.5 million contract carrying a $9.5 million average annual value, and remains eligible to sign a one-year deal under NHL rules for players over 35, should he choose to continue his career. Ovi just finished his 21st NHL season, where he led Washington with 32 goals and 64 points while appearing in all 82 games.

While speculation will inevitably continue throughout the offseason, those close to the situation have emphasized that no final decision has been made yet.

Ovechkin himself has publicly acknowledged uncertainty about whether he wants to keep playing or return home to Russia at this stage of his career.

For now, the timeline is the clearest development: a decision is not expected immediately, but rather sometime in July, once he has fully assessed both his personal situation and the Capitals’ long-term outlook.

Until then, the entire league waiting on what comes next.
