The Chicago Blackhawks announced some big news on Saturday when they revealed that they had come to terms on a new deal with star forward Connor Bedard, signing him to a 5 year deal at an average annual value and salary cap hit of $15 million.

It is a big number to be sure but in this new landscape of the National Hockey League the deal seemed to look fairly favorable for the Blackhawks, especially given that they buy one of Bedard's unrestricted free agent years with this deal. That being said the details of Bedard's new deal do introduce some potential headaches for the Blackhawks down the line.

For one it should come as no surprise that this contract will be extremely difficult to buyout, with Bedard receiving $9.8 million in signing bonuses in every year of this new deal. It seems extremely unlikely that the Blackhawks would ever need to do so, but it is worth noting.

Bedard's contract is also devoid of trade protection, with one major exception. While Bedard did agree to go one year past unrestricted free agency on this deal, he has also effectively put a timer on the Blackhawks with a full no-movement clause in the 5th and final year of his contract. This gives the Blackhawks 4 years to build a competitive roster around their star forward, with the no-movement clause giving Bedard full control over his own destiny in the 5th year of the contract.

It has become more and more common for NHL stars to use the power of such clauses to force their way onto specific teams, something that the Blackhawks will now have to be wary of moving forward. The good news here for the Blackhawks is they have bought themselves several years of runway with this new deal.
