The veteran forward is back in the NHL. See how much he will earn down below:
Earlier on Friday, it was confirmed that veteran forward Jonathan Toews has decided to play for the Winnipeg Jets for the upcoming season, and has an agreement in place until he can sign with them once free agency opens on July 1st.
Now, Elliotte Friedman has shared all the details on Toews’ projected contract and this is how his pay is going to be broken down in Winnipeg:
Bonuses:
After 20 Regular Season GP: $550,000
After 30 Regular Season GP: $550,000
After 40 Regular Season GP: $550,000
After 50 Regular Season GP: $550,000
After 60 Regular Season GP: $550,000
Jets in playoffs + Toews plays 50 games:
$500,000
Jets win 1st RD + Toews plays 50% of games:
$250,000
Jets win 2nd RD + Toews plays 50% of Round 2: $250,000
Jets win 3rd RD + Toews plays 50% of Round 3: $250,000
Jets win Stanley Cup + Toews plays 50% of Stanley Cup Final: $1M
This looks like a great deal for both parties. The Jets are not only bringing a hometown boy to Winnipeg, but also not losing a ton of money if Toews is not as healthy as he thought or struggles after not playing for two years.
Toews, whose recovery started with a trip to India where he underwent “an Ayurvedic detox called a Panchakarma”, has been training hard to return to the NHL . In 2022-23, he played out the last of an eight-year, $84 million contract he signed with the Blackhawks in 2014 that carried an AAV of $10.5 million, after missing the 2020-21 bubble season while recovering from COVID-19 and chronic immune response syndrome. He was then informed by general manager Kyle Davidson prior to the team’s final game of the season that he would not be re-signed. In August of 2023, Toews announced that he was stepping away from hockey “to give myself the time and space to fully heal and enjoy life to the fullest once again.”
Other teams had expressed interest in Toews, including the Colorado Avalanche and Toronto Maple Leafs.
This is just a great story all around.
