Full details of Kadri's contract including no-trade list and bonuses
The 30 year old free agent cashes in big time!
HockeyFeed
In case you missed yesterday's blockbuster news, the Calgary Flames signed free agent forward Nazem Kadri to a seven year deal worth $49 million and then traded forward Sean Monahan and his $6.3 million contract to the Montreal Canadiens to get under the salary cap.
Kadri had been rumored to be in negotiations with the Flames, the New York Islanders and the Colorado Avalanche but ultimately decided to sign on with the Flames for less than fans and analysts were expecting. Many predicted that the 30 year old Kadri could net as much as $9 million per season on a long-term deal, but he'll have to settle for a paltry $7 million (oh, the humanity...).
With Kadri now in the fold Flames GM Brad Treliving has added Kadri, Jonathan Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weegar in place of Johnny Gaudreau, Matthew Tkachuk and Sean Monahan this offseason. Not bad... not bad at all given the position that Treliving found himself in. Neither Gaudreau nor Tkachuk wanted to remain in Calgary and Monahan's contract was a serious anchor. By turning three potentially negative situations into three impact roster players, Treliving has done an excellent job in improving his team. The problem, of course, comes when both Kadri and Huberdeau get into the latter years of their contracts. Both men are over 30 years old and are signed to long term, big money deals that end in their late 30s. Unless your name is Alexander Ovechkin, those deals rarely deliver value. In Kadri's case too, the Flames will be bound to him for the entire 7 years, unless they can find a trade partner approved by Kadri himself.
Kadri's full contract details:
Kadri's deal comes with a $7 million cap hit that will continue until he's 39 years old. That's... that's got to make you nervous if you're a Flames fan. Sure, years 1-4 will be golden, but after that... well... just look at Milan Lucic on your very own roster.
As for Monahan, he'll hit the open market as a free agent after a one year stint in Montreal.
