Further disturbing details on Mike Babcock revealed by former player!
The former Red Wing blasts the controversial former NHL bench boss.
Mike Babcock will forever remain one of the most controversial head coaches in NHL history, especially following his last stint in the league in which he was fired by the Columbus Blue Jackets before a regular season game! And so, it comes as no surprise when more details come out about how he badly treated players gets exposed.
Earlier this week, former goaltender Jimmy Howard who played under Babcock with the Detroit Red Wings when he was just a rookie, was a guest on the Cam & Strick Podcast and shared an awful story how on Babcock could treat his own players.
Howard explained how when he was up for the title of rookie of the year, Babcock said in a press conference right in front of him that he would vote for Tyler Myers, not Howard, to win the title. At the end of the 2009–10 season, Myers, who played for the Buffalo Sabres, won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s best rookie. Howard placed second after a 63-game rookie season.
Here is how Howard recalls the unfortunately incident:
I can’t imagine any coach willingly looking to dish and hurt their own players in front of the media. This had to be a terrible blow to Howard’s confidence at the time when he is working hard to make a name for himself in the big league.
Between 2005 and 2020, Howard ended up playing 543 games for the Red Wings, which rank third in franchise history. He posted a 246-196-70 record, and maintained a 2.62 GAA and a 0.912 SV%, which ranks fourth among all goaltenders to ever play for Detroit.
I don’t know who needs more proof that Babcock shouldn’t come back in the NHL, but this one story from Howard gets added to the list. The sad thing is that more stories will probably continue to come out on Babcock, but as of right now, I feel like Babcock’s coaching career in the NHL is done. I cannot imagine any NHL team bringing him on board.
