GAME DAY REPORT: Rangers vets prank Habs coaches!
Keystone Press

If you happened to be paying attention during game 3’s warmup skate between the New York Rangers and the Montreal Canadiens, you’d likely have noticed something odd about the Rangers’ forward groupings. That’s because in a bizarre attempt to confuse the opposition’s coaching staff, the Rangers’ veteran leaders decided to jumble up their lines when executing rushes.

While it clearly didn’t produce the desired result for the Rangers, they would go on to lose 3-1, the idea was to put a sense of panic into the Canadiens coaches who had likely already planned for different combinations. Call it childish or unsportsmanlike, but it’s the Stanley Cup playoffs and teams will use any advantage possible in an attempt to gain an edge on their competition.

Some Rangers fans see the prank as a clear indication that the team isn’t focused on the task at hand. And given that the Rangers were outplayed and outmatched for most of Sunday’s game, it’s hard to argue against that assertion. Tonight however, t’s expected that the Rangers will run a more conventional warmup when the teams face off again at Madison Square Garden.
