Things turn ugly in the semi-final of the World Junior Ice Hockey Championship.
The semi-finals of the International Ice hockey Federation's World Junior Ice hockey Championship ended with some controversy on Sunday night after a game between the nations of Canada and Czechia turned ugly.
At the center of it all is the man that many Canadians had expected to see leading the charge for Canada in this tournament, projected first overall pick in 2026 Gavin McKenna, with McKenna even finding himself ejected from the game over comments he directed towards one of the on ice officials.
It was clear that many members of the Canadian roster felt they had been hard done by when it comes to the officiating, with several controversial moments late in the game leading to that feeling. Czechia would take the lead after the puck went off the skate of Czechian forward Max Curran, but after review it was determined that he had not kicked the puck into the net intentionally.
McKenna clearly disagreed with the call and made it clear that he still did when speaking to reporters following the loss.
"That goal kicked in could have gone either way," said McKenna during his post game interview.
You can see McKenna's full post game comments below:
Canadian forward Cole Reschny received a goaltender interference penalty with less than one minute to go in the game and it was clear that Reschny felt he had been pushed into the Czechian netminder. If you look closely you can very clearly see that Reschny is expressing that very thought, using some colorful language, to the official dragging him away to the penalty box.
It would be shortly after the penalty to Reschny that McKenna would find himself tossed by the officials. Only a few seconds later McKenna would be ejected from the game entirely by the officials on the ice for abuse of an official, earning himself a 10 minute misconduct with only seconds remaining on the game clock.
It was unclear what McKenna was yelling from the bench, but the officials on the ice didn't like what they heard.

While McKenna wasn't happy with the officiating it may very well be his own reputation that has taken the biggest hit in this tournament. Following the conclusion of the game fans were quick to take to social media, criticizing McKenna for the poor show of class as well as criticizing his play on the ice.
Was McKenna right to be upset? Or did the officials get it right? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
