A big day for the NHL's projected #1 pick in the draft.
There was a lot of attention on the National Hockey League's Scouting Combine on Saturday, especially when it comes to fans in the City of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Fans were salivating at the prospect of getting to see projected first overall pick Gavin McKenna test himself at the combine and I am happy to report that the results are now officially in. McKenna excelled in 4 of the events at the combine on Saturday, earning himself a top 8 finish in each of those 4 events and even claiming top spot in 1 of the 4.
McKenna's best event was the Aerobic Fitness event, otherwise known as (VO2max) with McKenna finishing above every other athlete that attempted the challenge on the day. McKenna earned a score of 65.0, just slightly ahead of Xavier Villeneuve who was right behind him with a 64.4. The drop off after that becomes more significant with Malte Gustafsson finishing 3rd at 61.0.
McKenna would finish in the Top 4 for the Isokinetic Squat, lifting almost as much weight relative to his own body weight as the other competitors. McKenna would finished at 3.40 lbs per lb of his own body weight, earning him 4th, with Pierce Mbuyi (3.62) Mathis Preston (3.57) and Adam Novotny (3.43) claiming the top 3 spots in the event.
McKenna would fair a little less well in the Force Plate No Arm Jump only managing to secure 8th spot with a jump of 19.5 inches, but that was just 1.4 inches shy of the top finisher in Beckham Edwards who scored a jump of 20.9 inches in the event.
McKenna would also finish 8th when it came to the pullup bar, managing 14 consecutive reps for what was a massive 5-way tie. It would be Adam Novotny who would claim first place in this event with 18 pull ups, followed by Ilia Morozov (17) Viggo Bjorck (16) Jakub Vanecek (16) and Jonas Hoen Langberg (15).
A pretty good showing for McKenna and one that I have no doubt will continue to fuel plenty of excitement in Toronto in the weeks leading up to the draft.
