Gavin McKenna under fire as serious questions surface in latest report

Not long ago, Gavin McKenna was seen as the next can’t-miss name for the 2026 NHL Draft. But lately, the conversation around the Penn State forward has shifted, and not entirely in a good way.

Earlier this year, McKenna found himself in the headlines following a January 31 incident that led to a felony charge of first-degree aggravated assault. That charge was later dropped after video review showed no intent to cause serious injury. However, he still faces misdemeanor charges of assault, harassment, and disorderly conduct, with a formal arraignment scheduled for April 8, according to The Athletic.

While the legal situation alone raised eyebrows, it’s not the only thing making NHL scouts pause. According to multiple reports, concerns about McKenna’s game, and maturity, are also creeping in.

“I still do have concerns with his play and desire away from the puck,” one NHL cout admitted.

Another went even further, questioning both his on-ice details and overall demeanor.

“If the information out there is true, it’s really unfortunate… but it would not have been my first choice to respond that way,” the scout said, adding that certain moments—including a flashy celebration—leave “a whiff of immaturity or entitlement.”

Despite all this, McKenna’s talent remains undeniable. I mean he was named on Wednesday one of the top-10 finalists for the 2026 Hobey Baker Award , which is presented to the top NCAA men’s hockey player. And in the NHL Draft, it often takes just one team to believe in a player to change everything.

Still, for a prospect once viewed as a potential No. 1 overall pick, the growing list of questions is hard to ignore and could shake up the entire 2026 draft picture this summer.
