Gavin McKenna's Mom gets emotional while watching her son make his NHL debut

For Gavin McKenna, the dream became a reality tonight.

The 18-year-old Whitehorse, Yukon native officially made his NHL debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs, taking the first step in what is expected to be a long and closely watched NHL career. McKenna entered the league as the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, and there has been enormous anticipation surrounding his arrival in Toronto ever since the Maple Leafs made him the centerpiece of their future.

McKenna's NHL debut is also a pretty special moment for his family, particularly his mother, Crystal McKenna. Crystal and the McKenna family made the trip from Yukon to be in attendance for Gavin's first NHL game, making sure that the people who have been alongside him throughout his hockey journey could experience this milestone together.

That connection to Yukon is an important part of McKenna's story. He grew up in Whitehorse and has never been shy about talking about his Northern roots. Long before he was a No. 1 draft pick or one of the most recognizable young players in Canadian hockey, McKenna was simply a kid from Yukon chasing his dream.

His grandfather, Joe Mason, has also been an important influence on his life. McKenna has spoken publicly about his grandfather's impact, and even has a tattoo featuring a cabin in the Yukon mountains, along with a moose and wolf, as a tribute to his family and Indigenous roots.

The significance of McKenna's journey wasn't lost on the Maple Leafs, either. After Toronto secured the first overall pick, members of the organization travelled all the way to Whitehorse to meet with the McKenna family and learn more about the young star and his upbringing.

Now, after years of development and countless hours on the ice, McKenna has finally reached the NHL. His first game will undoubtedly be remembered by the McKenna family, but perhaps nobody will feel the significance more than Crystal, who travelled from Yukon to watch her son take his first NHL shift.

For a player who has carried his Northern roots with him every step of the way, having his family there in Toronto makes tonight's debut that much more meaningful.
